How is it to be bankrupt?

Just because you have money problems doesn't mean you've been irresponsible with your credit, a change in circumstance is probably the main reason people get into difficulty. Thats what happened to todays interviewee Katie Edwards.

Katie is an undischarged bankrupt and runs a site to help Ladies in debt called ladies in the red here is the interview with her. Katies answers are in Italic.

What is your full name?

Katie Edwards

Ladies in Red - a site for ladies with Money troubles

What made you start the site?

I went bankrupt just after my 28th birthday last year following the collapse of my business. I quickly realised that there was very little support out there for women sharing my situation, especially support that was positive and spoke about coping with the effects of bankruptcy on a day to day basis. I created Ladies in the Red in March this year to try and provide something lighthearted but honest about my experience of insolvency and hoped that it would strike a chord with others going through the same thing.

I don't think you intend to make money from the site do you?

No, I don't intend to make any money. I intend the site to be a form of support for people going through financial difficulty and a blog for anyone who's interested in reading it.

Have you had Money issues yourself?

You betcha! I'm still bankrupt!

What happened for you, is the situation sorted now?

Nope, still broke and still bankrupt but I've only a couple of weeks of my 'term' left so hopefully things should start looking up soon. Fingers crossed! Katie has a countdown to solvency on her site.

What's the best advice you can give to people struggling with debt?

Go and find some impartial, independent advice and take it! Try the CCCS (Consumer Credit Counselling Service), Citizens Advice or National Debtline and be wary of anyone who's making money out of your financial distress - they aren't impartial or independent if you're seen as a nice little earner for them. It's vital that you find out what is the best solution for you and act on it.

A big thanks to Katie Edwards who runs a site to support ladies in debt
